Swami Vivekananda Jayanti: Today is Swami Vivekananda Jayanti, the great philosopher and spiritual master Swami Vivekananda. He was born on 12 January 1863 in Calcutta. In India, his birthday is celebrated as ‘Youth Day’. He was a worthy disciple of Ramakrishna Paramahamsa. After coming in contact with Ramakrishna Paramahamsa, Narendranath retired at the age of about 25 years. Before retiring, his name was Narendranath Dutt, but after retiring he was named Vivekananda. After the death of Swami Ramakrishna Paramahamsa, Swami Vivekananda established Ramakrishna Math in the whole country.
Swami Vivekananda was born in a Kayastha family in Calcutta. His father Vishwanath Dutt was a lawyer in the Calcutta High Court, while mother Bhuvaneshwari Devi was a woman of religious views. Narendra Nath went to school in 1871 at the age of eight. In 1879, he secured the first position in the entrance examination of the Presidency College.
Both life and thoughts of Swami Vivekananda are sources of inspiration. Following the ideas of Swami Vivekananda, the lives of millions of youth changed. Vivekananda had represented Sanatan Dharma on behalf of India in the World Religion General Assembly held in Chicago in 1893 in the US. He had established the Ramakrishna Mission, which is still doing its work.

Swami Vivekananda had asthma and sugar disease. He had also said, ‘These diseases will not let me cross even 40 years.’ His prophecy about his death proved to be true and he gave up his life at the very young age of 39 years, on 4 July 1902, at the Ramakrishna Math in Belur, wearing a Mahasamadhi in a meditative state. Swami Vivekananda was cremated on the banks of the Ganges in Belur. His Guru Ramakrishna Paramahamsa was cremated on the other side of the banks of the Ganges.
